Securus Technologies is a communications company that provides communications resources to inmates in correctional institutions and their families. Inmates can communicate through several methods including:
- Advanced Payments – A party, usually the family will pay the phone charges in advance
- Traditional Collect – The call is charged to the party that the inmate is calling, if accepted
- Inmate Debit – Charges are billed to the inmate’s account within the correctional unit
- Direct Bill – The charges are billed directly to another party, usually the family, on a regular basis
There is another method of communication using live video conferencing which is just like being there. At a specified time a hookup is arranged so both parties are on camera and speaker simultaneously so they can have a meaningful conversation. It saves the family a trip to the institution and time waiting in line to get to an open place where they can meet their incarcerated loved one. This is a very popular venue.
An added feature to the communications aspect of the program is the protection that is offered from criminal activity. With such an open platform it is apparent that certain individuals might use it for criminal purposes, so safeguards are built into the system.
There is a voice tracking feature that can recognize voices and tie that recognition to specific individuals. Voice monitoring and tracking is a major safeguard against the bringing in of drugs, alcohol, contraband and other illegal and unwanted items. Protection against threats, blackmail, and gang activity is also thwarted by the system.
It is possible to track voice imprints as they relate to all calls whether to family or other inmates. Any conversations that may lead to a criminal activity can be traced to individual callers or groups.
